About Northland Events Centre (Semenoff Stadium)

Semenoff Stadium (capacity 20,000) was redeveloped and opened in 2010 and is Northland’s premier multipurpose facility for sports events, conferences, meetings, expos, weddings, festivals and concerts. The stadium is owned by Whangārei District Council and operated by Northland Events Centre Trust, a charitable trust. It is the home of Northland Rugby and has hosted Rugby World Cup and Blues matches as well as many concerts and festivals including Six60 concerts, Fat Freddy’s Drop, L.A.B, Fritter Festival, Whangarei Christmas Festival, Ngāpuhi Festival and Juicy Festival.

In November 2023, Semenoff Stadium was voted as the best venue in the country - as judged by the New Zealand Events Association (NZEA). In the coming months, the venue will be hosting the Blues v Fiji Drua and Moana Pasifika v Queensland Reds Super Rugby games as well as the Northland Fritter Festival. 

Role Summary:

As Chief Executive, you will be based in Whangārei and be responsible for leading and managing all operational aspects of the Northland Events Centre, ensuring safe and cost-effective operations of the venue and commercial viability. You will oversee all aspects of the business including venue operations, facilities management and upgrades, revenue generation, financial management, patron experience and event attraction. You will lead a team of six permanent staff who have demonstrated passion and skill for the industry and organisation.

You will work with events and music promoters, sporting organisations and other potential clients to ensure a pipeline of quality events to maximise the utilisation of the facility throughout the calendar year. You will be the primary contact and build strong relationships with Whangarei District Council, business and community groups, local hapū, educational, cultural and sporting organisations as well as other key stakeholders. 

We are looking for an outstanding and inspirational events leader, with high-level commercial nous, financial oversight and outstanding stakeholder management skills in order to achieve the strategic objectives set out by the board. 

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Senior leadership experience at GM level or above within events, sport, business or similar.
  • Working knowledge or experience within the events industry. 
  • Strong networking and relationship management skills with ability to influence, lead, coach and inspire staff and a diverse group of other internal and external key stakeholders.
  • Sound commercial, strategic and financial management capability.
  • Ability to think outside the box, innovate and evolve to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Strong leadership skills, building effective and highly engaged team cultures. 
  • Experience reporting and / or working with Boards would be an advantage as well as experience working with council controlled organisations. 
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 
  • Strong project management and risk management experience. 
  • Working knowledge of health and safety legislation and practice 
  • Previous experience working with councils would be well regarded.
